Microsoft's not the only platform holder looking at the bigger picture

PlayStation TV

Sony?s kept its messaging regarding the PlayStation 4 fairly restricted to games since the console?s initial unveiling. It?s been the right strategy ? unlike Microsoft, the company seems to understand that it needs to capture the enthusiasm of its hardcore fanbase before it can expand into other markets. That doesn?t mean that it doesn?t have other agendas in mind, though.

One crafty IGN reader has dug up a trademark application filed by the Japanese giant for a service called ?PlayStation TV?. It was submitted to the United States Patent and Trademark Office on 26th June, and then altered just three days later. Fascinatingly, the company originally listed the trademark six years ago, before abandoning it in September 2012.

However, what the registration actually means is unclear. At E3 2013, Sony Pictures? CEO Michael Lynton mentioned that his company was making a commitment to producing new content specifically for the PlayStation Network, so this could be related to that. It could also just be a case of the firm holding onto a trademark that it may want to use in the future. Your guess is as good as ours.
