Former Iowa Gov. Ray backs Mitt (Politico)

Former Iowa Gov. Robert Ray, a prominent moderate Republican who served as governor for 14 years, endorsed Mitt Romney for president this morning.

The endorsement is a high-profile nod for Romney a month before the caucuses, and it's another development that reinforces his position as the only candidate in Iowa not trying to lock down the activist, social conservative right.

Just last year, Ray was involved in a 2010 effort to fight a conservative push to vote out three Iowa Supreme Court justices. Two Republican presidential candidates ? Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich ? were involved in the successful campaign to oust them.

If you're a hard-core Iowa social conservative, Ray's endorsement is probably not going to win you over for Romney. But then, you're also probably not inclined to support Romney to begin with, and the former Massachusetts governor is less focused on courting social conservative this time around than on winning over caucus-goers who can be swayed on the economy alone.

Ray?was acknowledged in the audience last night at the Polk County GOP event that Newt Gingrich addressed.
