Iran warns it might close Hormuz strait, stop oil

TEHRAN, Iran (AP) ? Iran's official news agency on Tuesday quoted a top official as saying Iran will close the Strait of Hormuz, cutting off oil exports, if the West imposes sanctions on Iran's oil shipments.

According to the IRNA report Tuesday Vice President Mohamed Reza Rahimi said Iran does not want hostilities but charged that the West continues its plots against Iran.

The West is considering limiting Iran's oil trade over its disputed nuclear program. Some 80 percent of Iran's foreign revenue comes from oil exports.

In Washington, State Department spokesman Mark Toner called the threat "bluster." He said it was "another attempt by them to distract attention from the real issue, which is their continued noncompliance with international nuclear obligations."

Rahimi has no major role in Iran's foreign or military policy.

Iran is conducting a 10-day naval maneuver in the area the of the Strait of Hormuz, where about 40 percent of the world's oil supply passes. Closing the strait would have immense world economic impact.

NFL: Vikings RB Adrian Peterson Tore His ACL in Win Over Redskins

Minnesota Vikings?running back?Adrian Peterson?tore a ligament in his left knee Saturday after taking a direct hit in a 33-26 win over the?Washington Redskins. ?Read more after the jump.

@Shay_Marie x @gametimegirl

An MRI showed the anterior cruciate ligament tear after the team returned to Minnesota.

Peterson said he knew ?it was something bad? the moment he was hit and that he was in ?severe pain? on he lay on the field. He was hurt when tackled by Redskins safety?DeJon Gomes?at the end of a 3-yard gain on the first offensive play of the second half.

?Anytime you take a blow to the knee like that, you?re concerned about the ACL, MCL,? Peterson said as he stood on crutches in the locker room. ?I?m trying to stay as positive as I can.?

The torn ACL would likely sideline Peterson for some nine months and make it difficult for him to return for the start of next season.

On the play after Peterson was hurt, Minnesota?s?Christian Ponder?suffered a head injury when sacked by?Adam Carriker?and?London Fletcher. Ponder remained in the game for one more play ? a third-down incomplete pass ? before heading to the locker room.

Coach Leslie Frazier said Ponder had ?concussion-like symptoms.? The coach said he?s uncertain whether the quarterback will play in next week?s season finale against the?Chicago Bears.

?We?ll have to weigh it when we get back,? Frazier said, ?and I?ll follow the doctor?s lead.?

Peterson had 12 carries for 38 yards when he left. He also had a 1-yard touchdown run in the second quarter.

Ponder completed 8 of 13 passes for 68 yards. He was replaced by?Joe Webb, who scored on a 9-yard run on the next series to give the Vikings the lead.

(AP) ? The worst Nigeria offshore oil spill in more than a decade has been contained before reaching the West African nation's coast, officials with Royal Dutch Shell PLC said Monday, less than a week after one of its lines bled crude into the Atlantic Ocean.

An investigation into how the spill of less than 40,000 barrels ? or 1.68 million gallons ? happened remains ongoing, though company officials acknowledged workers only discovered the leak after seeing a sheen of crude in water surrounding its Bonga offshore oil field.

Meanwhile, Shell officials say the company will clean up another spill it discovered while containing its own ? highlighting how prevalent pollution remains in oil-stained Nigeria after more than 50 years of production.

"We can undeniably say we traced our oil ... and stopped it," said Cliff Pain, who manages the Bonga operation for a Shell subsidiary.

Shell organized a helicopter flight Monday for journalists to see the Bonga field ? controlled from a large ship as opposed to a stationary rig ? about 75 miles (120 kilometers) off Nigeria's coast. There, waters appeared free of the oil sheen as ships continued to patrol along the underwater lines linking the vessel to oil fields and transfer buoys for filling tankers.

The leak discovered Dec. 20 came from a break in a flexible line about 360 meters out from the vessel that sends oil to tankers, Pain said. While the vessel has a variety of gauges to check pressure on the line, it wasn't until daylight broke that workers noticed a sheen surrounding the Bonga vessel, he said.

It takes about 25 hours to fill a waiting tanker with 1 million barrels of oil from the vessel, Pain said. That means the leak could have spewed for hours before being noticed.

At its height, Shell statistics show the sheen spread across about 350 square miles (900 square kilometers), matching an estimate earlier issued by an independent watchdog group called SkyTruth. Nigerian government officials previously said the spill only affected an area a third that size

Using ships and aircraft, workers spread chemical dispersants to break up the oil, which also evaporated in the region's warm water and air, said Steve Keedwell, a Shell employee who helped oversee the cleanup operation. Shell ultimately stopped the sheen about 11 miles (18 kilometers) before it made landfall, Pain said.

However, workers then discovered a separate oil spill around the mouth of a river in Delta state, said Mutiu Sunmonu, Shell's Nigeria country chairman. Sunmonu said samples of the oil showed it came from a different source, though the company would clean it up as well.

"When I sighted it myself, my initial reaction was anger, but I told myself: 'You know, you just cannot afford to be angry, just deal with it,'" Sunmonu said.

The Nigerian group Environmental Rights Action, which monitors spills around Nigeria's oil-rich southern delta, has blamed Shell for the new spill. Nnimmo Bassey, the group's executive director, could not be immediately reached for comment Monday night.

Shell operates the Bonga field in partnership with Italy's Eni SpA, Exxon Mobil Corp., France's Total SA and the state-run Nigerian National Petroleum Corp. It produces about 200,000 barrels of oil a day ? around 10 percent of production in Africa's most populous nation. The field remains shut down and Shell officials offered no estimate Monday of when production could resume at a field vital to Nigeria's government finances.

Nigeria, an OPEC member nation producing about 2.4 million barrels of crude oil a day, is a top supplier to the United States. However, pollution from spilled oil stains its Niger Delta region, with crude lapping against beaches and leaving a black ring around creeks in an area about the size of Portugal.

Some environmentalists say as much as 550 million gallons of oil poured into the delta during Shell's roughly 50 years of production in Nigeria ? a rate roughly comparable to one Exxon Valdez disaster per year. Many blame Shell and foreign companies working in Nigeria for the pollution. However, Shell in recent years has blamed most of its spills on militant attacks or thieves tapping into pipelines to steal crude oil, which ends up sold on the black market or cooked into a crude diesel or kerosene.

Talking with journalists, Sunmonu acknowledged that the limited spill, open ocean and favorable weather had helped Shell quickly contain the spill. If it had been on land, the oil could have sunk into the soil, remaining there for years, he said.

It also would have pushed Shell into negotiations with village elders to clean up the spill, something it often contracts other companies to handle. Many view the company with hostility after its years in the delta, and its employees remain targets of kidnap gangs and militants.

"You don't have communities to contend with" on the ocean, Sunmonu said.

Investing in awesomeness | sacha chua :: living an awesome life

I?ve been thinking of what I want to learn more about when it comes to investing.

I?ve read stacks and stacks of personal finance books. I enjoy reading them, even though many books repeat the same uncontroversial advice. My ledger of income, expenses, and investments goes back to 2005, when I moved to Canada and started managing my own finances. We might never be absurdly wealthy, but if we continue to be frugal and hard-working, I think we?ll enjoy more flexibility and less stress than most people have.

2011 was a good year, despite the fluctuations in the stock market. Although it was occasionally discouraging to see my carefully-saved index funds dip below their book price, I kept plugging away. I figure that if businesses have managed to do fine despite past events like the Great Depression, things will be okay. If the rules of the game have changed and the stock markets no longer perform the way they used to, well, we?ll have bigger problems than the lack of a decent return on investment.

Investment-wise, we?re on a good path. I don?t have the time or interest to pick individual stocks, and I?m comfortable with a boring balanced portfolio made up of index funds and skewed towards equities. From here on, it?s more about time and persistence than sophistication.

What I?m curious about is this: what?s worth investing time and money in? What does investing in awesomeness look like?

I?m not the kind of person who chases bucket-list experiences in order to check off things I?d like to have done. I?ve tried it and it didn?t sit well with me. I like simple things and everyday activities. Fortunately, W- does too.

I thought about resuming my experiments with outsourcing. I don?t mind my chores that much, though. I?d rather save the time (money is time, after all) so that I can give myself a focused year instead of spending it on an hour here, an hour there that can be so easily absorbed into distractions of everyday life. I might pick up the experiment again someday, when I run into something that I don?t want to limit by my skills. We?ll see.

So here?s what I?m saving up for and investing in instead:

  • Experimenting and learning
    • Tools for working better
    • Trying a new community-supported agriculture program, because we can
  • Streamlining life
    • Multiple sets of socks that are all the same, to reduce the need for matching
    • Decluttering and the freedom to ignore sunk costs
    • Simplification and fewer frustrating things
  • A year-long sabbatical in 2014, during which I plan to focus on writing and development

It?s about striking a balance between long-term goals and shorter-term ones. I don?t want to postpone enjoyment until I?m 65 or 70. I want to test ideas earlier than later, so that I can tweak and adjust.

I?m a little envious of other people who are exploring the worlds of freelancing, entrepreneurship, or lifestyle design. Envy being mostly useless, I shift that energy into analyzing my decisions and testing some of my assumptions. It looks like IBM will still provide the best stability as I build up other experiments. I?ll continue with that for now, and I?ll trust that this preparation will give me more opportunities for interestingness over the next few years. In the meantime, I guard my evenings, weekends, and holidays more closely from the temptations of work. These are excellent times to test ideas for the next step, and they shouldn?t be wasted.

What do I want to learn about investing? I want to learn how to better test my assumptions about life. I want to learn about small and simple experiments that have good ROI for knowledge. I want to learn how to make better choices. I want to get even better at ignoring what the world tells me I should want in favour of figuring out what I truly need.

Today I read a book called I Moved Your Cheese. It reminded me of Jonathan Livingston Seagull, another book I enjoyed. In I Moved Your Cheese, the author pointed out that even if you?ve absorbed the lessons from Who Moved My Cheese? on not letting change frustrate you, you?re still chasing after cheese. I don?t want to chase after money, or time, or even happiness. (The odd thing about happiness is that once you pursue it, you can?t have it.) I want to create space for interestingness and discovery.

So we?re investing in wanting less and needing less, in enjoying life more, and in experimenting with making life better. I?d love to hear about your experiences along these lines!

New non-GMO 'super' broccoli contains extra cancer-fighting nutrients, but less vital sulfur

(NaturalNews) British scientists have developed a new variety of broccoli that contains up to three times more of a powerful heart-health nutrient than conventional varieties -- and they did so without the use of genetic modification (GM). However, the "super" broccoli, known as "Beneforte," also contains less vital sulfur than conventional varieties.

By cross-breeding traditional British broccoli with wild, bitter Sicilian broccoli, researchers from the Institute for Food Research and the John Innes Centre, both in Norwich, England, were able to produce the Beneforte variety, which contains up to three times the normal amount of glucoraphanin (GRP).

GRP is a precursor to sulforaphane (SF), which is the actual nutrient responsible for providing anticancer, anti-diabetic, and antimicrobial benefits. GRP in its standalone form provides little, if any, health benefits, and must come into contact with myrosinase (MYR), another enzyme naturally present in broccoli, in order to become metabolized into beneficial SF.

The Beneforte scientists, however, claim the extra GRP in their broccoli helps to improve the breakdown down of fat in the body, and prevent it from building up in arteries and causing heart disease. They also say that eating Beneforte helps to reduce cholesterol levels, and are currently conducting human studies to verify these claims.

"There's a lot of circumstantial evidence that points to (glucoraphanin and related compounds) as the most important preventive agents for (heart attacks) and certain cancers," Lars Ove Dragsted, a professor at the University of Copenhagen's department of human nutrition, is quoted as saying by USA Today

Since it is not GM, Beneforte is unlikely to have any negative side effects. After all, many non-GM fruits and vegetables sold in stores today are hybridized. However, unless there is extra MYR in Beneforte along with the extra GRP, it is unclear whether this so-called "super" variety of broccoli is any more beneficial to health than standard varieties.

Beneforte was introduced in the UK last month, and has been available in select stores in California and Texas for roughly the past year. And within the next couple of weeks, it is set to be introduced in stores across the US.

Ron Paul Is The Second Most Popular Republican Candidate On Facebook (And He?s Gaining)

Screen Shot 2011-12-23 at 3.57.00 PMI know there are lots of people out there who have passionate feelings about Ron Paul. He's a principled and independent fighter for old-time American values, or a conspiracy theorist loon, or someone who let idiotic racist stuff get published in his newsletters decades ago... or whatever else it is that you see about him that makes you react. I'm not here to take sides and tell you how to vote, I'm just writing this article to point out that he's been gaining the most new Facebook fans every day for most of the past month. He's now the second-most popular candidate behind Mitt Romney (and Democratic incumbent Barack Obama, of course), according to the Inside Facebook Election Tracker.

Common gets through 'low point' to record 9th CD (AP)

NEW YORK ? Most people are excited before recording a new album, but Common didn't particularly feel that way.

He says before making his ninth album, "The Dreamer, the Believer," he was at a low point musically.

"I hadn't figured out what I was going to do, what label I was going to work with," he said. "I wasn't inspired."

Common had major success with 2005's "Be" and "Finding Forever," which came two years later. The albums reached gold status and each earned multiple Grammy nominations, including a win for best rap performance by a duo or group for "Southside" with Kanye West. Both albums were mainly produced by West.

But 2008's "Universal Mind Control," produced by the Neptunes, was a commercial disappointment, only selling 245,000 units, according to Nielsen SoundScan; the CD, however, did earn a Grammy nomination for best rap album.

But Common parted ways with Universal Music, where he's released five of his nine albums.

Now, on Warner Bros. Records, the rapper said he's got his mojo back, mainly thanks to producer and longtime friend No I.D.

"He was willing to be like, `Yo, let's go! Let's get it. Let's go get on this hip-hop,'" Common recalled. "So I think that meant a lot to me and from there we just continued to grow."

The album, released Tuesday, features Nas, Maya Angelou, John Legend and Makeba Riddick. The 39-year-old says the disc embarks on "real, traditional, new hip-hop."

The researchers evaluated the role of Mediterranean diet ingredients in the prevention and mitigation of cell damage.

Oleic acid and hydroxytyrosol present in a particularly high concentration in virgin olive oil and n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids found in fish affect the cellular mechanisms involved in the development of acute pancreatitis, a disease of oxidative-inflammatory etiology. Therefore, oleic acid and hydroxytyrosol can be considered potential functional ingredients, as they may prevent or mitigate this disease.

Such was the conclusion drawn in a study conducted by a research group at the University of Granada Physiology Department, where the researchers examined the role of the Mediterranean diet ingredients in the prevention and mitigation of cell damage.

An In Vitro Experimental Model

These scientists developed an in vitro experimental model that allows scientist to evaluate how changes in the membrane fatty acid composition in vivo caused by a change in the type of fat ingested affect the ability of cells to respond to induced oxidative-inflammatory damage with cerulein (acute pancreatitis).

This is the first study to examine how fatty acids and antioxidants affect the cellular mechanisms that respond to local inflammation in the pancreas. The University of Granada scientists have evaluated the role of antioxidants from a preventive approach, that is, by using an experimental model in mice in which cell damage is induced after pretreatment with these nutritional components.

The author of this study, Mara Beln Lpez Milln affirms that "there is increasing evidence that there are oxidative-inflammatory processes involved in the origin of chronic diseases and that diet plays an important role in such processes. The antioxidant (phenolic compounds) and antiinflammatory (omega-3 fatty acids) effects of diet components (nutrients and bioactive compounds) prevent/mitigate the pathological incidence of oxidative-inflammatory processes".

The author reminds us that the Mediterranean diet has been recognized by the UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage "and it is important to provide scientific evidence that explains its beneficial effects on health".

Study linking virus and chronic fatigue retracted (AP)

NEW YORK ? A prestigious scientific journal is retracting a controversial 2009 report that linked chronic fatigue syndrome to a virus.

In an unusual move, the journal Science is taking that step on its own. Normally, authors retract their own research papers when serious problems arise after publication.

But Science has lost confidence in the report and the validity of its conclusions, editor-in-chief Bruce Alberts writes in Friday's issue. He said most of the authors have agreed in principle to retract the paper "but they have been unable to agree on the wording of their statement." A retraction signed by all the authors "is unlikely to be forthcoming," Alberts wrote.

Chronic fatigue syndrome is characterized by severe fatigue for at least six months, impaired memory and other symptoms.

The 2009 paper, from scientists at the Whittemore Peterson Institute in Reno, Nev., the Cleveland Clinic and the National Cancer Institute, reported finding a virus called XMRV in blood cells of some patients with chronic fatigue syndrome. That raised hope that a cause of the mysterious illness had been found, although other viral suspects over the years had proven to be false leads.

But follow-up studies found no evidence of such a link. Last May, Science published two reports suggesting the original finding was due to lab contamination.

At the time, Alberts published a statement declaring that the validity of the study was "now seriously in question."

Then in September, the authors retracted some of the data, citing contamination.

In his statement on the full retraction, Alberts said the authors had also acknowledged omitting important information about the study's procedures in an illustration of some lab results.

Robert Silverman of the Cleveland Clinic, one of the paper's 13 authors, said in a statement Thursday that he was pleased by the full retraction. He said he had sought one this summer after finding that blood samples were contaminated.

Through a spokeswoman, another study author, Francis Ruscetti of the cancer institute, declined to comment.

Annette Whittemore, president of the Whittemore institute, said in a statement that her organization remains committed to discovering the roots of the disorder. "It is not the end of the story, rather it is the beginning of our renewed efforts," she said. "We ... look forward to the rigorous review of our scientific research."

A key figure in the research, Judy Mikovits, is no longer with the Whittemore institute.

Protesters accuse Putin's party of rigging vote (AP)

MOSCOW ? Several thousand protesters took to the streets Monday night and accused Prime Minister Vladimir Putin's party of rigging this weekend's parliamentary election in which it won the largest share of the seats.

It was perhaps the biggest opposition rally in years and ended with police detaining about 300 activists. A group of several hundred marched toward the Central Elections Commission near the Kremlin, but were stopped by riot police and taken away in buses.

Estimates of the number of protesters ranged from 5,000 to 10,000. They chanted "Russia without Putin" and accused his United Russia party of stealing votes.

In St. Petersburg, police detained about 120 protesters.

United Russia won about 50 percent of Sunday's vote, a result that opposition politicians and election monitors said was inflated because of ballot-box stuffing and other vote fraud. It was a significant drop from the last election, when the party took 64 percent.

Pragmatically, the loss of seats in the State Duma appears to mean little because two of the three other parties winning seats have been reliable supporters of government legislation.

Nevertheless, it was a substantial symbolic blow to a party that had become virtually indistinguishable from the state itself.

The result has also energized the opposition and poses a humbling challenge to Putin, the country's dominant figure, in his drive to return to the presidency.

Putin, who became prime minister in 2008 because of presidential term limits, will run for a third term in March, and some opposition leaders saw the parliamentary election as a game-changer for what had been presumed to be his easy stroll back to the Kremlin.

More than 400 Communist Party supporters also gathered Monday to express their indignation over the election, which some called the dirtiest in modern Russian history. The Communists finished second with about 20 percent of the vote.

"Even compared to the 2007 elections, violations by the authorities and the government bodies that actually control the work of all election organizations at all levels, from local to central, were so obvious and so brazen," said Yevgeny Dorovin, a member of the party's central committee.

Putin appeared subdued and glum even as he insisted at a Cabinet meeting Monday that the result "gives United Russia the possibility to work calmly and smoothly."

Although the sharp decline for United Russia could lead Putin and the party to try to portray the election as genuinely democratic, the wide reports of violations have undermined that attempt at spin.

Boris Nemtsov, a prominent figure among Russia's beleaguered liberal opposition, declared that the vote spelled the end of Putin's "honeymoon" with the nation and predicted that his rule will soon "collapse like a house of cards."

"He needs to hold an honest presidential election and allow opposition candidates to register for the race, if he doesn't want to be booed from Kamchatka to Kaliningrad," Nemtsov said on Ekho Moskvy radio.

Many Russians have come to despise United Russia, seeing it as the engine of endemic corruption. The balloting showed voters that they have power despite what election monitors called a dishonest count.

"Yesterday, it was proven by these voters that not everything was fixed, that the result really matters," said Tiny Kox of the Council of Europe's Parliamentary Assembly, part of an international election observer mission.

Other analysts suggested the vote was a wake-up call to Putin that he had lost touch with the country. In the early period of his presidency, Putin's appeal came largely from his man-of-the-people image: candid, decisive and without ostentatious tastes.

He seemed to lose some of the common touch, appearing in well-staged but increasingly preposterous heroic photo opportunities ? hunting a whale with a crossbow, fishing while bare-chested, and purportedly discovering ancient Greek artifacts while scuba diving. And Russians grew angry at his apparent disregard ? and even encouragement ? of the country's corruption and massive income gap.

"People want Putin to go back to what he was in his first term ? decisive, dynamic, tough on oligarchs and sensitive to the agenda formed by society," said Sergei Markov, a prominent United Russia Duma member.

The vote "was a normal reaction of the population to the worsening social situation," former Kremlin-connected political analyst Gleb Pavlovsky was quoted as saying by the Interfax news agency.

Only seven parties were allowed to field candidates for parliament this year, while the most vocal opposition groups were barred from the race. International monitors said the election administration lacked independence, most media were biased and state authorities interfered unduly at different levels.

"To me, this election was like a game in which only some players are allowed to compete," said Heidi Tagliavini, the head of the observer mission of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe.

Of the 150 polling stations where the counting was observed, "34 were assessed to be very bad," Tagliavini said.

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said Washington has "serious concerns" about the elections.

"Russian voters deserve a full investigation of all credible reports of electoral fraud and manipulation, and we hope in particular that the Russian authorities will take action" on reports that come forward, Clinton said.

Other than the Communist Party, the socialist Just Russia and the Liberal Democratic Party led by mercurial nationalist Vladimir Zhirinovsky are also expected to increase their representation in the Duma; both have generally voted with United Russia, and the Communists pose only token opposition.

Two liberal parties were in the running, but neither got the 7 percent of the national vote needed to win seats. Nemtsov's People's Freedom Party, one of the most prominent liberal parties, was denied participation for alleged violations in the required 45,000 signatures the party had submitted with its registration application.

About 60 percent of Russia's 110 million registered voters cast ballots, down from 64 percent four years ago.

Social media were flooded with messages reporting violations. Many people reported seeing buses deliver groups of people to polling stations, with some of the buses carrying young men who looked like football fans, who often are associated with violent nationalism.

Russia's only independent election monitoring group, Golos, which is funded by U.S. and European grants, has come under heavy official pressure in the past week. Golos' website was incapacitated Sunday by hackers, and its director Lilya Shibanova and her deputy had their cellphone numbers, email and social media accounts hacked.

A new rumor points to the potential power of the Wii U (Digital Trends)

We still don?t know the exact date when the Wii U will descend upon us, but Nintendo?s next offering?and the first console in the next generation of gaming?is stepping ever closer to reality?if the reports and leaks are to be believed.

It is tough to keep a secret when your technology is semi-dependent on numerous third-party developers. Earlier in the year, EA claimed that the Wii U would be?at least as powerful as the Xbox 360 and PS3, and possibly up to 50-percent more powerful. Yet through it all, Nintendo has remained mum on what to expect from its next offering.

That?s OK though, we have the internet.

According to a source that spoke with Wii U Daily, the Wii U is being tested with the following specs under the hood:

  • Quad Core, 3 GHz PowerPC-based 45nm CPU
  • 768 MB of DRAM ?embedded? with the CPU, and shared between CPU and GPU
  • Unknown, 40nm ATI-based GPU
While this should be considered a rumor?as all news about the Wii U should be classified as a rumor until Nintendo decides to officially release info?it is in keeping with what we?ve been hearing. With one exception. It is worth noting the insane amount of eDRAM listed, which means that it is either a typo, a confirmation that the source is wrong, or that the Wii U is going to be so powerful that it may become sentient and try to take over the world.

The article also notes that the ?Quad Core, 3 GHz PowerPC-based 45nm CPU? is very close to the Xbox 360 and PS3?which is true as both run 3.2 GHz processors, although the architecture is very different and a direct?comparison?is?pointless?until we have all the details. The source also claims that the Nintendo has been testing two versions, one with 768 MB of DRAM, and the other with 1 GB.

With the exception of the memory listed, it sounds fairly close to the rumors we heard earlier in the year which claimed that the Wii U would be roughly 50-percent more powerful than the PS3 and Xbox 360, lending a bit of credence to the source.?The Wii U will also support 1080p graphics and Nintendo has confirmed that it is investigating the possibility of 3D compatibility.

The thing that really stands out though is the mention of the possibility of 1 GB eDRAM. To put that in perspective, the Xbox 360 has 10 MB of eDRAM, while the PS3 does not use any. Embedded DRAM is becoming more and more common in both the gaming industry and for computing processors in general, but even the brand new POWER7 processor from IBM that was released just last year only features 32 MB of eDRAM.

That shouldn???t invalidate the rest of the rumor though, as it is far more likely that the Wii U will have some amount of eDRAM, but the 768 MB or 1 GB RAM is referring to more traditional memory. The Xbox 360 has 512 MB of GDDR3 RAM, while the PS3 uses 256 MB. If the 768 MB is correct, that would be in keeping with the ???50-percent more powerful??

But for now it is all just rumor and innuendo, and we may have a long wait before us until we have solid details from Nintendo. ?

Former Iowa Gov. Ray backs Mitt (Politico)

Former Iowa Gov. Robert Ray, a prominent moderate Republican who served as governor for 14 years, endorsed Mitt Romney for president this morning.

The endorsement is a high-profile nod for Romney a month before the caucuses, and it's another development that reinforces his position as the only candidate in Iowa not trying to lock down the activist, social conservative right.

Just last year, Ray was involved in a 2010 effort to fight a conservative push to vote out three Iowa Supreme Court justices. Two Republican presidential candidates ? Rick Santorum and Newt Gingrich ? were involved in the successful campaign to oust them.

If you're a hard-core Iowa social conservative, Ray's endorsement is probably not going to win you over for Romney. But then, you're also probably not inclined to support Romney to begin with, and the former Massachusetts governor is less focused on courting social conservative this time around than on winning over caucus-goers who can be swayed on the economy alone.

Ray?was acknowledged in the audience last night at the Polk County GOP event that Newt Gingrich addressed.

NFL Picks Week 13: Wild-Card Contenders That Will Stay Alive with Wins

The NFL playoffs are fast approaching, and that means the margin for error for competing teams is getting smaller by the week.

The Tennessee Titans will continue to surprise in Week 13 as Chris Johnson and company take their talents on the road to battle the struggling Buffalo Bills.

Tim Tebow and the Denver Broncos are poised for another W on the road at slumping Minnesota, who released quarterback Donovan McNabb earlier this week.?

Don't wait for the results to find out who will reign supreme this weekend. Here are three teams that will come one game closer to the ultimate goal in Week 13:

?

Tennessee Titans over Buffalo Bills

The Bills have lost four straight games and show no signs of being the early-season contenders we thought they were a month ago. Ryan Fitzpatrick and the offense have been declining, and injuries are a serious problem for this team.

The Titans will ride the fresh legs of Chris Johnson, who broke out last week for 190 yards rushing against Tampa Bay to lead the Titans to their third road victory of 2011. A win would effectively eliminate Buffalo from the playoff race and keep Tennessee's hopes very much alive at 7-5.

?

Chicago Bears over Kansas City Chiefs

Who isn't beating up on the Chiefs these days? Kansas City has looked dreadful without quarterback Matt Cassel, losing to the Patriots and Steelers in blowout fashion.

However, the Chicago Bears now find themselves in the same circumstance after losing quarterback Jay Cutler for the season to a busted thumb. A tough loss at Oakland last week will have them hungry and awake this weekend at Soldier Field, though.

The Bears are beasts at home this season, 5-1 overall, and the Chiefs are flat out lost.

?

New York Jets over Washington Redskins

Don't be fooled by the Redskins' road win in Seattle last week. Washington is still a lost cause this year, and on Sunday they'll supply another much-needed win for the New York Jets.?

The Jets are barely alive in the AFC at the moment; 6-5 means there is hope, but slim hope. Four of those five losses have come on the road this season, so this game will be tough.?

Odds are, the fans in attendance will be booing the 'Skins, so Jets QB Mark Sanchez is off the hook for this week. New York wins and gets right back into the postseason picture.?

Racism's Mental Toll May Explain Some Health Disparities (HealthDay)

FRIDAY, Nov. 25 (HealthDay News) -- Racism is similar to trauma in how it affects the mental health of black adults in the United States, a new analysis finds.

An examination of 66 previous studies that included more than 18,000 black adults concluded that there are common responses to both racism and trauma, including somatization (psychological distress that is expressed as physical pain), interpersonal sensitivity and anxiety. The more stressful the racism, the more likely a person was to report mental distress.

The study is published online in the Journal of Counseling Psychology.

The researchers suggested that the link between mental health and racism could contribute to physical health disparities between blacks and other Americans of different races and ethnicities.

"The relationship between perceived racism and self-reported depression and anxiety is quite robust, providing a reminder that experiences of racism may play an important role in the health disparities phenomenon," study lead author Alex Pieterse from the University at Albany, State University of New York, said in an American Psychological Association news release. "For example, African Americans have higher rates of hypertension [high blood pressure], a serious condition that has been associated with stress and depression."

The study's authors noted that therapists should routinely assess their black patients' experiences with racism during treatment.

Angelina Jolie: I'll Never "Be as Good" as My Own Mother

Angelina Jolie is a devoted mother of six, but the 36-year-old actress says she pales in comparison to her own mother Marcheline Bertrand, who passed away in 2007.

PHOTOS: Angelina's teenage modeling portfolio

"My mother was a full-time mother. She didn't have much of her own career, her own life, her own experiences," Jolie said on 60 Minutes Sunday. "Everything was for her children."

The 36-year-old actress-turned-director has three biological children with partner Brad Pitt: Shiloh, 5, and twins Knox and Vivienne, 3. They also have three adoptive children: Maddox, 10, Pax, 8, and Zahara, 6.

PHOTOS: Shiloh's adorable fashion choices

"I will never be as good a mother as she was. I will try my best, but I don't think I ever will be," Jolie said.

"She was the most generous, loving woman," she added, choking back tears. "She's better than me."

EXCLUSIVE VIDEO: Angelina Jolie meets with refugees in Malta

Jolie admitted that talking about her mother is her "soft spot," but she's grateful for the lessons Bertrand taught her about motherhood. She also hopes her mother would be proud of her directorial debut, In the Land of Blood and Honey, which hits theaters December 23.
