New excavations in Sweden indicate use of fertilizers 5,000 years ago

Apr. 26, 2013 ? Researchers from the University of Gothenburg, Sweden, have spent many years studying the remains of a Stone Age community in Karleby outside the town of Falk?ping, Sweden. The researchers have for example tried to identify parts of the inhabitants' diet. Right now they are looking for evidence that fertilisers were used already during the Scandinavian Stone Age, and the results of their first analyses may be exactly what they are looking for.

Using remains of grains and other plants and some highly advanced analysis techniques, the two researchers and archaeologists Tony Axelsson and Karl-G?ran Sj?gren have been able to identify parts of the diet of their Stone Age ancestors.

'Our first task was to find so-called macrofossils, such as old weed seeds or pieces of grain. By analysing macrofossils, we can learn a lot about Stone Age farming and how important farming was in relation to livestock ranching,' says Axelsson.

Another aim has been to collect animal bone material -- or simply 5,000 year old food remains. The researchers know that pieces of bones from cattle, pigs and sheep can be found at the site.

'By studying the levels of isotopes in the bones, we can for example find out where the animals were raised, which in turn can give important information about their role in trade,' says Sj?gren.

The results of the first grain analyses have now been presented, and besides revealing that both barley and wheat were farmed at the site, they point to elevated levels of the isotope N15 (nitrogen 15). The elevated levels may indicate that fertilisers were used in the area of Karleby already 5,000 years ago.

'We will continue our analyses both in the field and in the lab, and are hoping to find more macrofossils. Hopefully we'll find some weed seeds, as they may help confirm that fertilisers were indeed used since the type of weeds found in a field can signal whether fertilisers or some other method was used,' says Axelsson.

Stocks stall on tepid US economic growth

NEW YORK (AP) ? The stock market stalled Friday after the U.S. economy didn't grow as much as hoped and earnings from a handful of big companies failed to rev up investors.

The economy grew at a 2.5 percent annual rate in the first three months of the year, the government said. That was below the 3.1 percent forecast by economists.

The shortfall reinforced the perception that the economy is grinding, rather than charging, ahead. Investors have also been troubled by reports in the last month of weaker hiring, slower manufacturing and a drop in factory orders. Many economists see growth slowing to an annual rate of around 2 percent a year for the rest of the year.

U.S. government bonds, where investors seek safety, rose after the report.

"There are some concerns as we head into the summer," said JJ Kinahan, chief derivatives strategist for TD Ameritrade. "In the last three weeks, we've seen numbers that weren't exactly what you'd love to see."

Corporate earnings this week have also contained worrisome signs. Many companies missed revenue forecasts from financial analysts, even as they reported higher quarterly profits. For example, Goodyear Tire slipped 3.3 percent to $12.51 Friday after revenue fell short of analysts' estimates, hurt by lower global tire sales.

Of the companies that have reported earnings so far, 70 percent have exceeded Wall Street's expectations, compared with a 10-year average of 62 percent, according to S&P Capital IQ. But 43 percent have missed revenue estimates. Just over half of the companies in the S&P 500 have reported quarterly results.

The S&P 500 index dropped 2.92 points, or 0.2 percent, to close at 1,582.24.

The Dow rose 11.75 points, or 0.1 percent, to 14,712.55. The index got a big lift from Chevron. Profit for the U.S. oil company beat expectations of financial analysts in the first quarter, pushing shares up 1.3 percent to $120.04.

Three stocks fell for every two that rose on the New York Stock Exchange.

Both indexes were up for the week and remain slightly below their all-time highs reached April 11. The Dow index rose 1.1 percent this week while the S&P gained 1.7 percent.

The market has been bolstered by the Federal Reserve's easy money policy. The disappointing growth figure for the economy will ensure that the Fed sticks with its stimulus policy, providing support for stocks, said Peter Cardillo, chief market economist at Rockwell Global Capital.

"The economic data that we've been getting points to no early exit for the Fed's stimulus," Cardillo said.

The Nasdaq composite fell 10.72 points to 3,279.26, a decline of 0.3 percent. The index is 2.3 percent higher this week.

The tech-heavy index has lagged the Dow and the S&P 500 this year, but it led the way higher this week, boosted by Microsoft. The software giant, which makes up 5.3 percent of the Nasdaq, recorded its biggest weekly gain since January of last year ? up 6.8 percent. It reported earnings April 19 that beat Wall Street expectations. The company also began an aggressive push into the computer tablet market.

Apple, the largest stock in the Nasdaq, also had a good week. The stock rose 6.8 percent to $417.20, its best weekly gain since November, despite posting a decline in quarterly profit Tuesday. Apple accounts for 7.6 percent of the Nasdaq composite.

Among other big names investors focused on:

Amazon.com fell 7 percent to $254.81 after the company warned of a possible loss in the current quarter. The online retailer also reported lower income for the first quarter as it continued to spend heavily on rights to digital content.

Expedia fell 10 percent to $58.56 after the online travel company reported a quarterly loss.

Homebuilder D.R. Horton surged 8.7 percent to $26.66 after its income nearly tripled thanks to a continuing recovery the housing market. The results handily beat the forecasts of financial analysts who follow the company.

J.C. Penney jumped 12 percent to $17 after the billionaire financier George Soros disclosed that he had taken a 7.9 percent stake in the struggling company.

In government bond trading, the yield on the 10-year Treasury note slipped to its lowest rate of the year, 1.67 percent, from 1.71 percent the day before. The yield has fallen from 2.06 percent six weeks ago as traders move money into lower-risk investments.

The dollar weakened against the euro.

The European currency bought $1.3029 at the end of day, compared with $1.3002 the day before. The ISE dollar index, which measures the U.S. currency against a group of other world currencies including the Japanese yen and the euro, dropped 0.3 percent, to 82.48.

Here's How Jeff Goins Writes | Copyblogger

Image of The Writer Files Logo

    We are at war.

Each day, facing the blank page and our own fears, writers around the world do battle with the same forces that would prevent us from simply producing the words, no matter their purpose.

Thankfully there are trailblazers ? allies that arrive in times of uncertainty ? our fellow writers and teachers who offer their wisdom, courage, and assistance.

Jeff Goins is one of those guides, an author, award-winning blogger, and coach, who stopped by The Writer Files to share some of his battle-tested stories from his own journey as a writer.

In this installment, Mr. Goins shares his advice for beating Resistance, the nobility of writing every day, and the one trait every great writer must possess.

Let?s dig into the file of Jeff Goins, writer ?

    About the writer ?

    ?
Who are you and what do you do?

My name is Jeff, and I?m a writer. I write nonfiction books and share what I learn with my tribe.
    ?
Part of what I do (writing and publishing books) I consider my ?art.? I do it because I have to, but I don?t expect it to pay the bills. The other part (selling professional education to other writers) is what I consider my patron that makes everything else possible.
    ?
What is your area of expertise as a writer or online publisher?

I also help other writers and artists beat resistance through my blog, books, and courses.
    ?
Where can we find your writing?

    Ebook: Youareawriter.com
    Book: Wreckedthebook.com
    Blog: Goinswriter.com
    ?
You can also Amazon me. Do people say that? They should.

    The writer?s productivity ?

How much time, per day, do you spend reading or doing research?

I read every morning for about an hour. I don?t consider this research, though.
    ?
Research for me happens when I start writing; I?ll get stuck and have to look something up. I like it that way, because everything I?m learning is practical and applicable.
    ?
When I read, it?s just for my love of good books and to deepen my understanding of the craft.
    ?
Before you begin to write, do you have any pre-game rituals or practices?

Sometimes, I pray. Usually, I just tell myself to shut up and write.
    ?
What?s your best advice for overcoming procrastination?

Stop calling it procrastination. What most people call being ?lazy? is really just fear. Fear of failure. Fear of rejection. Fear, fear, fear.
    ?
Call it what it is and face the blank page, anyway.
    ?
What time of day is most productive for your writing or content production?
    ?
Definitely early morning. I try to wake up and write before any of my distractions do.
    ?
Do you generally adhere to a rigid or flexible writing system?
    ?
    Both.
    ?
Rigid: I write every day, no excuses or exceptions.
    ?
Flexible: I don?t do word counts or timed sessions. If I?ve written, even just a few words, then it?s a success.
    ?
How many hours a day do you spend actually writing (excluding email, social media etc.)?
    ?
I write for various projects about two to three hours a day. Beyond that, I start to see diminishing returns. But I?m still new at this, so who knows.
    ?
    Do you write every day?
    ?
This is like asking if I sleep every day. It?s not so much a matter of want to as have to. I can?t not do it.

    The writer?s creativity ?

    Define creativity.
    ?
I think that?s like saying, ?Define the wind.? Not to get all Zen or anything, but it?s easier (and more helpful) to describe what the wind does than to say what it is.
    ?
Creativity brings good things in the world that otherwise would not exist. It?s a noble act of pushing back darkness and giving hope to despair.
    ?
Who are your favorite authors, online or off?
    ?
Ernest Hemingway. Seth Godin. C.S. Lewis. Anne Lamott. Michael Hyatt . Shauna Niequist. The Apostle Paul.
    ?
Can you share a best-loved quote?

?Life isn?t a support-system for art. It?s the other way around.
    ~ Stephen King

Do you prefer a particular type of music (or silence) when you write?
    ?
Ambient. My go-to channel on Spotify is Explosions in the Sky.
    ?
How would you personally like to grow creatively as a writer?
    ?
Lately, I?ve been fascinated with narrative nonfiction. My next book is a memoir, and it?s kicked my butt more than any other single piece of writing. But I love what I?m learning and how I?m growing.
    ?
Do you believe in ?writer?s block?? If so, how do you avoid it?
    ?
No. I like what [Anne] Lamott says about this. To paraphrase, there?s a difference between being blocked and being empty.
    ?
Sometimes when we feel blocked, we need to do something that is not writing to fill back up. Other times, we?re just afraid.
    ?
Who or what is your ?Muse? at the moment (i.e. specific creative inspirations)?

For me, writing is a calling. It?s not something I chose; it chose me.

My muse is the conviction that I don?t just write for myself, I do it, because I have to.
    ?
Would you consider yourself someone who likes to ?take risks??
    ?
Not really. While I like doing new things and the thrill of the unknown, I?m terrified of failure. So as much as I can, I try to play it safe. But then I get bored and have to do something that might not work.
    ?
    What makes a writer great?
    ?
What doesn?t make a writer great is talent or intuition or giftedness.

What makes a writer great is one thing: perseverance.

    The writer?s workflow ?

What hardware or typewriter model are you presently using?
    ?
I use a MacBook Pro, 13 inch. I also own an old typewriter, but I?m not sure of the brand.
    ?
What software are you using for writing and general workflow?
    ?
I usually write on Text Edit, a basic text-editing program for Mac. I also use Ommwriter, when I need to be free of distractions.
    ?
Do you have any tricks for staying focused?
    ?
    I?m sorry ? what?d you say? I wasn?t listening.
    ?
I am terrible at this. I?ve tried systems and procedures and think what really works for me is to create urgency.
    ?
If I can procrastinate or do something besides write, I will. So I force myself into a situation that requires me to write. That may mean a public deadline or going some place I know won?t have wifi. I have to trick myself.
    ?
Have you run into any serious challenges or obstacles to getting words onto the page?
    ?
Yes. Myself. I always get in the way.
    ?
How do you stay organized (methods, systems, or ?mad science?)?
    ?
Once a week, I throw away anything on my desk, in my office, or on my computer that I haven?t used in a while. Other than that, it?s more like managing chaos than staying organized.
    ?
How do you relax at the end of a hard day?
    ?
I play with my son, read a book, and cook dinner. Then I usually watch a movie with my wife.

A few questions just for the fun of it ?

Who (or what) has been your greatest teacher?
    ?
My favorite book on writing was Walking on Water by Madeleine L?Engle. She taught me that a writer writes not because she wants to, but because she must.
    ?
What?s your biggest aggravation or pet peeve at the moment (writing related or otherwise)?
    ?
No time. Where does it all go? I?m spread too thin and consumed with busyness when I want to be getting better (not just more popular). It?s both a great and tough thing being a writer in this Information Age.
    ?
Choose one author, living or dead, that you would like to have dinner with.
    ?
Definitely Hemingway. But we?d probably have to go hunting.
    ?
Do you have a motto, credo, or general slogan that you live by?

You can outlast those who are lucky
and outwork those who are lazy.

What do you see as your greatest success in life?
    ?
Other than staying married and creating life (no two small feats), when it comes to writing stuff, I?m really proud of the online course, Tribewriters.com, I started last year. People tell me it?s changed their lives. That?s really rewarding to hear.
    ?
If you could take a vacation anywhere in the world tomorrow, where would you go (cost or responsibilities are no object)?
    ?
Seville, Spain. I studied abroad there and have been dying to go back. Once a month, I literally dream of returning.
    ?
What would you like to do more of in the coming year?
    ?
I want to write more words that people don?t see. I feel compelled to do more of the deep writing that professionals do ? the long, hard stuff that doesn?t get noticed or applauded. But, it?s what makes you great.
    ?
Can you offer any advice to writers and content producers that you might offer yourself, if you could go back in time and ?do it all over??
    ?
Yes. This is the one thing I didn?t do for years, and it defeated me more than anything else:
    ?
    Don?t give up.
    ?
Keep going, don?t stop when you get discouraged. Go, go, go. This is about endurance, not energy. As the clich? goes, it?s a marathon, not a sprint.

    ?
Is there anything else you?d like our readers to know?
    ?
I?d be remiss if I didn?t say this, and it?s a lesson I learned from Copyblogger:

All good writing is copywriting. Every writer has to earn a reader?s attention, word by word and line by line.

And finally, the writer?s desk ?

Line by line we wage the battle.

Thankfully, the only weapons we need are our wits, our will, and a reliable method by which to record our best ideas.

And whatever you do, don?t forget to celebrate your victories, however small, as Mr. Goins reminds us with his strategic placement of maracas. Ol?!

    Thank you Jeff!

And thank you for flipping through The Writer Files ?

Should Pets Be Allowed In Hospitals? | Care2 Causes

Would you want your pet to visit you if you were in the hospital?

I?m not talking about the amazing comfort dogs who are currently in Boston, bringing solace to people on the street around the marathon location as well as visiting the injured at area hospitals.

No, I?m talking about the growing number of hospitals that allow personal pets in their patients? rooms.

Many medical facilities allow visits from trained therapy animals, but until recently, they didn?t permit the patient?s actual pet to stop by.

But that?s changing, as some hospitals decide that the emotional benefits to patients outweigh the risks.

    From The New York Times:

The University of Maryland Medical Center in Baltimore lets family pets visit their owners, so long as certain requirements are met, as does the University of Iowa Hospital and Clinics in Iowa City; Virginia Commonwealth University Medical Center in Richmond; Rush University Medical Center in Chicago; two hospitals associated with the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn.; and more than a dozen other medical centers.

On Long Island, North Shore University Hospital allows personal pets to stay with patients around the clock in its 10-bed palliative care unit, as does Hospice Inn, a freestanding 18-bed hospice facility that?s part of North Shore-LIJ Health System.

There are rules, of course. A doctor has to approve the visit, and there has to be an attestation from a veterinarian that the animal is healthy and up to date on all its shots. Most animal visitors are dogs, and generally most institutions require that they be groomed within a day or so of a visit. They need to be on a leash while passing through hospital corridors; cats must be in a carrier.

Dogs and cats are typically the only two types of pet allowed, and for the most part, they cannot spend the night.

In general, hospitals have not reported any major problems.

    From The Chicago Tribune:

The Rev. Susan Carole Roy, director of pastoral care services at the University of Maryland Medical Center, also reports no problems since the hospital started allowing animal companions in 2008.

?Our pets are an integral part of our everyday lives, and they share in our greatest joys and darkest hours,? said Roy. ?For patients to be able to reconnect with their pets ? even for a short period of time ? can really be very meaningful. It allows them to get in touch with a part of their lives that is often lost when they become patients.?

However, there may be some exceptions. I wrote earlier this year about a pregnant woman in the UK who wanted her dog Barney beside her in the delivery room during the birthing process. After the two-hour birth, Barney, believed to be a yellow labrador, stayed alongside the woman, her partner and the midwife, until the family left with their newborn child.

Not everyone approved. Several nurses and doctors at the hospital expressed their disgust at the idea of a dog in the maternity ward.

Equally, not all pets are welcome. Rats, gerbils, tarantulas, snakes, have all been pets in my home at various times, thanks to my children, but I wouldn?t want them showing up at my sick bed.

What do you think? Should pets be allowed into hospitals to visit their sick owners?

Vertus Bluetooth kit adds stereo streaming to any pair of ordinary speakers

    Vertus adds stereo capability

Nowadays we're spoiled with options in the Bluetooth speaker market, and many of the high-end ones -- especially those from Soundfreaq and Nokia -- even feature dual-system streaming (DSS) that lets one speaker pair with another to enable true stereo playback. But if you already have a pair of old but nice-sounding speakers with 3.5mm input on both, then here's a quick and easy way to add Bluetooth to them. Dubbed Vertus, this Kickstarter project features the above pair of receivers based on CSR's TrueWireless Stereo, a nifty technology that's been made available since early 2009.

Similar to any DSS system, one of the Vertus dongles (the right channel, in this case) acts as the master to receive the stereo stream from a Bluetooth source, and then it'd throw the left-channel stream to the other dongle. So provided that your speakers have their own power source, it's just a matter of charging these aluminum dongles up (a single charge lasts up to 10 hours), plugging them in and then pair the right receiver with your audio source. Simple! That said, at $120 this kit may struggle to gain traction in retail, so hopefully the audio quality will somewhat justify the price. Introductory video after the break.

Green Throttle Takes (A Few) Mobile Games to the ... - AllThingsD

The last time I owned a videogame console, Hypercolor shirts were in, everyone pegged their jeans, and I had a perm. In other words, it was a long time ago. (It was the Nintendo Entertainment System, by the way.)

I?m ready to get a new system now, and choosing one is proving to be a difficult decision. Microsoft?s Xbox 360, Sony?s PlayStation 3 and Nintendo?s Wii U are the most well-known and popular ones. But I don?t want to spend a lot of money, and I already have a Roku set-top box and DVD player, so I don?t necessarily need the entertainment aspects of those systems. What to get?

Enter Green Throttle. Started by one of the co-creators of the Guitar Hero videogame with two former Palm employees, Green Throttle is an app and game-controller solution that aims to turn your existing Android tablet or smartphone into a game console.

The only thing you have to buy is the Atlas game controller, which costs $40 and connects via Bluetooth. If your mobile device can be plugged into a TV for playing video, the company also sells bundles that include special cables for connecting to your HDTV. Meanwhile, the company?s free Arena application acts as the game center, where you can download titles and play games.

Green Throttle is more about enhancing the game-playing experience of mobile devices, rather than being a direct competitor to Xbox or PlayStation. And it succeeds in that goal. The controller allows for more precision and capabilities than a touchscreen. It?s also nice to be able to play games on a bigger screen. But there?s a big drawback, and that?s its lack of compatible games. There are currently fewer than a dozen games that work with Green Throttle, so it?s simply not worth buying right now ? though it has potential.

Green Throttle works with any device running on Google?s Android operating system, version 4.0 or higher. I tested it on the Google Nexus 7 and Amazon Kindle Fire HD, and setup was relatively painless.

    P1040106

After turning on the Atlas controller and downloading the Arena from the Google Play Store, I went to the app?s settings menu to connect the controller. The pairing process took some time, though. Normally, when I connect a Bluetooth headset or keyboard to a smartphone or tablet for the first time, the whole process only takes a couple of minutes.

With Green Throttle, it took at least a few minutes for both tablets to find the Atlas controller. Enough time had elapsed that I thought something might be wrong, but eventually I got a prompt to connect to the controller, and I was up and running shortly after that. Fortunately, once paired, reconnections were almost instantaneous.

The controller is similar to the ones used with the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. It?s powered by two AA batteries (included in the package), and there are two joysticks, a directional pad, X, Y, A, B buttons, and two trigger and two shoulder buttons on the top edge of the controller. The power, start and back buttons are located in the middle. All the controls were within easy reach, and provided good feedback ? not too stiff or mushy-feeling.

    P1040104

The user interface of the Green Throttle Arena game hub is pretty straightforward. There are four tabbed sections you can peruse: Home, My Games, Recommended and Settings. The latter is self-explanatory. Home features the latest Green Throttle news, recent games and featured games. My Games is where you?ll find all your downloaded titles, while Recommended surfaces editors? picks.

A couple of things were missing: One is a search feature for looking up specific titles; the other is the ability to look for games by type, such as action, puzzle, sports and so on. Green Throttle says it will add both functions in the future.

For now, this isn?t a huge issue, since there aren?t that many games. Games must be built to work with the Atlas controllers, so you can?t use them to play titles you?ve already downloaded from the Google Play store.

Currently, there are only eight available titles from the Arena game store, with six c. Green Throttle said it is adding one or two new games to the store every week, and more than 500 companies are using its software to build titles for the system, including a few well-known console game developers.

I tried all eight titles. Most are casual or retro-style arcade games. Given the limitations of a mobile device?s hardware (computing and graphics power, memory, etc.), you won?t find any really complex or graphics-intensive titles, compared to dedicated game consoles like the Xbox and PlayStation, or even the Razer Edge gaming tablet. So, if you?re looking for big-name titles like Assassin?s Creed III or BioShock Infinite, this isn?t the system for you.

    P1040102

Instead, you get games like Coral Combat, a Space Invaders-type game that takes place underwater, or FishTails, a racing game where you have to collect as many coins as possible while dodging obstacles. There are also multiplayer games like Crystal Swarm, where you can team up to kill alien bugs. I played the game with a friend, using the Kindle Fire HD hooked up to my Samsung TV.

They?re all worth a try (most games are free, but APO Snow costs $1.99, and Gunslugs costs $1.49), but given their simple nature, I wasn?t drawn to play them on a regular basis, with the exception of the snowboarding game APO Snow, and Blocks Party.

Performance was smooth. Also, having a controller with physical buttons made it easy to navigate through the games and accomplish moves.

Final score: Green Throttle takes the mobile gaming experience to the next level in an affordable way, but it?s not worth it until it beefs up its game selection.

Update: Shortly after this review was originally published, Green Throttle announced six new games for the Arena app, including The Bard?s Tale and Duke Nukem 3D.

Yahoo snags exclusive rights to Saturday Night Live's archives starting September 1st

Yahoo may have failed in its bid to acquire Hulu last year, but CEO Marissa Mayer announced it's snagged rights to show something the streaming site has been known for: Saturday Night Live. The deal with Broadway Video will give Yahoo exclusive online access to archived SNL content from 1975 through 2013 including show clips, "select" musical performances, behind the scenes and dress rehearsal clips. Yahoo will also have non-exclusive access to show current season Saturday Night Live clips in the US and a license to distribute library show clips internationally. Beginning September 1st, those archived clips will be pulled from other internet video platforms (presumably Hulu and Netflix) for one year. The press release (included after the break) indicates Broadway and Yahoo will celebrate the partnership at Yahoo!'s Digital Content NewFront event on the 29th. We'll see if there's more to learn about Yahoo's ever-evolving media strategy then.

Comet could blast Earth with odd meteor shower

NASA / ESA / J.-Y. Li (Planetary Science Institute), and the Hubble Comet ISON Imaging Science Team

This NASA Hubble Space Telescope image of Comet C/2012 S1 (ISON) was photographed on April 10, when the comet was slightly closer than Jupiter's orbit at a distance of 386 million miles from the sun (394 million miles from Earth).

    By Irene Klotz
    Discovery News

A small but incredibly bright comet heading toward the sun could do more than dazzle Earth?s skies when it arrives later this year. Scientists say Comet ISON, already shedding dust at the prodigious rate of about 112,000 pounds per minute, could spark an unusual meteor shower.

Computer simulations predicting the location and movement of the comet?s dust trail show Earth will be passing through the fine-grained stream around Jan. 12, 2014.

Some of the particles, which are smaller in diameter than a red blood cell, should be pushed back by the pressure of sunlight, allowing them to be captured by Earth?s gravity when the planet plows through the largely invisible stream.

    PHOTOS: Close Encounters with Comets

?As the comet passes Earth?s orbit going into the sun, you?ll have particles trailing behind it. But since it?s passing so close to the sun, you?re also going to have particles pushed away by the pressure of the sunlight. That means we?ll have particles coming outward and also falling inward. We don?t often deal with particles that come both directions,? said Bill Cooke, lead scientist at NASA's Meteoroid Environment Office at the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala.

The particles are so small that even though they will hit the atmosphere at about 125,000 mph, instead of burning up, triggering so-called ?shooting stars,? they will be stopped entirely, predicts astronomer Paul Wiegert, with the University of Western Ontario in Canada.

The only visible and detectable sign of the comet dust might be a proliferation of bright blue clouds at the edge of space. Scientists suspect these so-called noctilucent, or ?night-shining? clouds are be seeded by dust in the upper atmosphere.

    PHOTOS: Russian Meteor Strike Aftermath

Eventually, the trapped comet dust will make its way -- silently and invisibly -- to the planet?s surface.

Comet ISON, which was discovered in September 2012 by amateur astronomers in Russia, is believed to be making its first swing into the inner solar system, so unlike repeat fliers, it hasn?t laid down a rich dust trail from previous orbits for Earth to fly through.

ISON is an acronym for the telescope the astronomers were using, the International Scientific Optical Network.

ANALYSIS: Awesome Mars-Comet Impact Less Likely

If the comet survives -- and that?s a big if -- the comet will about 700,000 miles above the surface of the sun when it makes its closest approach on Nov. 28. The closest it will come to Earth will be about 40 million miles on Dec. 26.

A comet in the 1970s passed 10 times farther away from the sun than ISON's orbit and partially disintegrated, noted Cooke.

?ISON may very well not survive. I guess we won?t know for sure until we look for it to come out from behind the sun,? Cooke told Discovery News.

Currently the comet is about 280 million miles away from Earth and approaching the outer part of the asteroid belt.

Hubble brings faraway comet into view

    Wednesday, April 24, 2013

The NASA Hubble Space Telescope has given astronomers their clearest view yet of Comet ISON, a newly-discovered sun grazer comet that may light up the sky later this year, or come so close to the Sun that it disintegrates. A University of Maryland-led research team is closely following ISON, which offers a rare opportunity to witness a comet's evolution as it makes its first-ever journey through the inner solar system.

Like all comets, ISON is a "dirty snowball" ? a clump of frozen gases mixed with dust, formed in a distant reach of the solar system, traveling on an orbit influenced by the gravitational pull of the Sun and its planets. ISON's orbit will bring it to a perihelion, or maximum approach to the Sun, of 700,000 miles on November 28, said Maryland assistant research scientist Michael S. Kelley.

This image was made on April 10, when ISON was some 386 million miles from the Sun ? slightly closer to the Sun than the planet Jupiter. Comets become more active as they near the inner solar system, where the Sun's heat evaporates their ices into jets of gases and dust. But even at this great distance ISON is already active, with a strong jet blasting dust particles off its nucleus. As these dust particles shimmer in reflected sunlight, a portion of the comet's tail becomes visible in the Hubble image.

Next week while the Hubble still has the comet in view, the Maryland team will use the space telescope to gather information about ISON's gases.

"We want to look for the ratio of the three dominant ices, water, frozen carbon monoxide, and frozen carbon dioxide, or dry ice," said Maryland astronomy Prof. Michael A'Hearn. "That can tell us the temperature at which the comet formed, and with that temperature, we can then say where in the solar system it formed."

The Maryland team will use both the Hubble Space Telescope and the instruments on the Deep Impact space craft to continue to follow ISON as it travels toward its November close up (perihelion) with the sun.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) ? Former Florida Lt. Gov. Jennifer Carroll said Thursday she had no idea law enforcement was investigating a veterans charity accused of running illegal slot machine-style casinos until two agents walked into her office last month.

Carroll said the agents told her she wasn't under investigation and asked her about Allied Veterans of the World, a group she had done public relations for before becoming lieutenant governor. When the agents walked out about 20 minutes later, Gov. Rick Scott's chief of staff was waiting outside her office. He told her Scott wanted her to resign. She said yes ? there was no discussion, no hesitation.

"In my military time, when the commander in chief makes a demand or a request, you say 'Aye, aye sir,' and you march on. And that's what I did," the retired Navy officer told The Associated Press in her first comments about the investigation. "I thought it would be better to remove myself from being a distraction."

Carroll wanted to make clear she did nothing wrong. She said was paid $6,000 a month to do public relations work for Allied Veterans and had nothing to do with the alleged gambling.

Nearly 60 people have been charged in the Allied Veterans case, accused of running a $300 million gambling ring. Investigators said Allied Veterans spent just 2 percent of its profits on veterans charities while its leaders spent millions on boats, real estate and sports cars.

Carroll said her work was typical of what she would charge other clients. She said that when she was in the Legislature, Allied Veterans never asked her to sponsor bills that would benefit the group.

She said Scott was aware of the work when he asked her to be his running made in 2010.

"This was part of my vetting," she said. "Everything was on the table. My association with clients, my degrees, my time in the service, my time in the Legislature, all my bills, all my media press clips. All of that was discussed. So this wasn't anything that was new to anybody."

She said Scott hasn't spoken to her since her resignation March 12, but she has stayed loyal and praised his work. While some people have suggested she challenge him in a primary next year, she said that won't happen. Though she might run for office again.

"I still have a lot more to offer ? my skills, my knowledge, my talents, my passion particularly for helping people," she said. "I will be back whether I'm helping someone in their campaign or whether I'm running a campaign myself or going into the corporate sector. Whatever the Lord provides for me and he opens the door, I will walk through."

Carroll said she was fooled by Allied Veterans and thought they were doing legitimate work. She said she was unaware of the investigation until she was interviewed by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement agents.

"I know how hard it is to serve, I know how veterans coming back how hard it is for them to get the level of support they need, and for any organization to use the name of veterans to acquire wealth and not do their intended mission and stated purpose ... I take offense to that," Carroll said.

Teen hiker found alive after three days, friend still missing

By Melissa Pamer, Samantha Tata, Beverly White and Robert Kovacik, NBCLosAngeles.com

A 19-year-old who had been missing in California's Cleveland National Forest for three days was found alive late Wednesday, police said, but the search continued for his hiking companion.

Rescue crews ratcheted up their search of the rugged terrain about 7:50 p.m. PT (10:50 p.m. ET) ?after receiving a tip from a hiker who said he had spotted Nicholas Cendoya. The whereabouts of Cendoya's friend Kyndall Jack, 18, were not immediately known,?Orange County Sheriff's Lt. Jason Park said.

As the search continued for Jack, Cendoya was airlifted from the canyon and taken to a hospital where he was listed in serious condition. Hospital officials said Cendoya was "foraging for food off the land" to survive.

"He is weak, severely dehydrated and slightly confused," OC Fire Authority?s Kris Concepcion said.

Waiting at the Trabuco Canyon Fire Station, a command post during the search, Cendoya's friends and family erupted in cheers when they were told the teen had been found alive.

The young hikers, both from Costa Mesa, Calif., had called 911 at 8:30 p.m. PT (11:30pm ET) on Easter Sunday to say they were lost, but their cellphone batteries died and authorities could not locate them.

    More news from NBCLosAngeles.com

Since Monday, searchers on foot, dogs and helicopters have been combing over a network of trails in the Holy Jim Canyon area, trying to find the two teens.

    Orange County Sheriff via AP

Hiker Nicholas Cendoya was found alive late Wednesday. His companion, Kyndall Jack, right, remains missing.

On Wednesday, dozens of volunteers joined official search crews that began work at 6 a.m. PT (9 a.m. ET) -- so many extra searchers that some were turned away.

A couple of volunteer searchers had gotten lost in afternoon and were in cell phone communication with authorities, who had not been able to track them down as of 6 p.m. PT (9 p.m. ET), according to authorities on scene.

Russ Jack, Kyndall Jack's father, begged volunteers to stay away from the search area unless they're experience hikers. He called the scene a "modern-day circus," but assured volunteers he was grateful for their efforts.

"We don't need lookey-loos up here just hanging out and not helping. If you're not an experienced hiker or a mountain biker, then please stay home," Russ Jack said. "There's just too many people and it's hurting the efforts that the authroties have put into this right now."

Dawn Jack, Kyndall's mom, teared up in front of news cameras when the pair spoke.

"We just need our children to come home safely," Dawn Jack said. "We need for everybody else to leave here safe, so please help us out now by not coming up just to hang out ? we know you love us and are supporting us."

Officials with the Orange County Sheriff's Department said enough personnel had been scheduled to continue the search through the weekend.

"We're going to increase the number of our ground searches. We're going to commence with air operations in strategic areas with high terrain that's difficult to traverse," said Orange County Fire Authority spokesman Capt. Jon Muir. "It's going to be a combined effort, and we're not going to stop until we have a good resolution."

Authorities have said the fairly mild conditions in the area are survivable, even when temperatures drop overnight. But the terrain off-trail can be difficult, and it's possible one or both of the hikers were injured, search officials said.

Grief counselors were at Costa Mesa High School -- the pair's alma mater -- for the first time on Wednesday. Cendoya played football, while Jack is known as "the jackhammer" on the volleyball team.

New genetic evidence suggests a continuum among neurodevelopmental and psychiatric disorders

Apr. 2, 2013 ? A paper published this month in the medical journal The Lancet Neurology suggests that a broad spectrum of developmental and psychiatric disorders, ranging from autism and intellectual disability to schizophrenia, should be conceptualized as different manifestations of a common underlying denominator, "developmental brain dysfunction," rather than completely independent conditions with distinct causes.

In "Developmental Brain Dysfunction: Revival and Expansion of Old Concepts Based on New Genetic Evidence," the authors make two key points:

? Developmental disorders (such as autism and intellectual disability) and psychiatric disorders (such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder), while considered clinically distinct, actually share many of the same underlying genetic causes. This is an example of "variable expressivity:" the same genetic variant results in different clinical signs and symptoms in different individuals. ? When quantitative measures of neuropsychological and neurobehavioral traits are studied instead of categorical diagnoses (which are either present or absent) and individuals are compared to their unaffected family members, it is possible to more accurately demonstrate the impact of genetic variants.

According to Andres Moreno De Luca, M.D., research scientist at the Autism and Developmental Medicine Institute at Geisinger Health System and article co-author, "Recent genetic studies conducted in thousands of individuals have shown that identical genetic mutations are shared among neurodevelopmental disorders that are thought to be clinically distinct. What we have seen over the past few years is that genetic mutations that were initially found in individuals with one disorder, such as intellectual disability or autism, are then identified in people with an apparently different condition like schizophrenia, epilepsy, or bipolar disorder."

"It turns out that the genes don't respect our diagnostic classification boundaries, but that really isn't surprising given the overlapping symptoms and frequent co-existence of neurodevelopmental disorders," said Scott M. Myers, M.D., autism specialist at Geisinger Health System and article co-author.

"We believe this study supports use of the term 'developmental brain dysfunction' or DBD, which would encompass the broad spectrum of neurodevelopmental and neuropsychiatric disorders," said David H. Ledbetter, Ph.D., executive vice president and chief scientific officer at Geisinger Health System, and article co-author. "Additionally, it is clear that diagnostic tools such as whole genome analysis for both children and their families are essential when diagnosing and treating these disorders in order to ensure the most personalized treatment."

An example used in the study was analysis of intelligence quotient (IQ) scores. The average IQ score in the general population is 100. Historically, the medical community has defined intellectual disability as an IQ of less than 70 (with concurrent deficits in adaptive functioning). But according to Dr. Ledbetter, there is little difference in the function of a child with an IQ of 69 versus 71, yet one may be diagnosed with a disability and the other may not.

"We know a variety of factors contribute to IQ score, including genetics, as a child's IQ is highly correlated with that of his or her parents and siblings. Therefore, an important factor to take into consideration when interpreting IQ is family background," said Dr. Ledbetter. "Imagine if we have a child with a genetic abnormality, but the child's IQ is 85. Technically, we would not diagnose this child with a disability. However, if the family of this child has IQs around 130, we could consider that this child's genetic anomaly has 'cost' him or her 45 IQ points -- a very substantial difference."

According to Dr. Myers, "One implication of this concept is that studies designed to investigate the causes and mechanisms of developmental brain dysfunction should focus on measurement of quantifiable neuropsychological and neurobehavioral traits across groups of individuals with different clinical diagnoses. Another is that whenever possible, individuals with a particular genetic variant or other risk factor should be compared to their unaffected family members, not just to population norms."

Other authors on the paper were Thomas Challman, M.D. of Geisinger; Daniel Moreno De Luca, M.D., of Yale University, New Haven, Conn.; and David Evans, Ph.D., of Bucknell University, Lewisburg, Pa.

China March services PMIs hit multi-month highs

BEIJING (Reuters) - Growth in China's services sectors rose to multi-month highs in March as a construction boom and firmer demand lifted business and confidence, auguring well for a modest recovery in the world's second largest economy.

The official purchasing managers' index (PMI) for the non-manufacturing sector climbed to 55.6 in March from February's 54.5, aided by a buoyant construction sector. A PMI reading above 50 indicates accelerating activity.

A separate services PMI published by HSBC showed growth rebounding to a six-month high of 54.3 in March as improving economic conditions lifted demand, pushing business confidence to a 10-month high of 65.0.

Analysts welcomed the data as an encouraging sign that China's moderate economic revival is extending beyond its factories into an increasingly-important services industry.

"China is on track to beat the government's growth target for 2013," said Dariusz Kowalczyk, an economist at Credit Agricole CIB in Hong Kong, referring to Beijing's goal of expanding gross domestic product (GDP) by 7.5 percent this year.

"Services account for a larger share of GDP than manufacturing so improvement of sentiment here bodes well for the entire economy," said Kowalczyk, whose 8.5 percent GDP forecast for China in 2013 is among the most bullish in the market.

China's services industry has weathered the global slowdown much better than its factory sector, in part because it does not rely on exports for growth unlike manufacturers, who have been battered by crumbling foreign demand.

Twin PMI surveys for China's manufacturers published on Monday showed factory production quickened last month on firmer domestic demand, though the speed of the pick-up was not as brisk as some expected.

Indeed, the pair of services PMIs also showed that though firms expanded last month, business is not surging. Overall new orders in the services sector nudged up just 0.2 index points to 52.0 in March from February, the official PMI showed.

The services sector, which overtook factories as the biggest employer in China in 2011, accounted for 46 percent of the Chinese economy last year, as big as the manufacturing industry.

    WELL-DISTRIBUTED RECOVERY

The National Bureau of Statistics, which publishes the official PMI, said the rise in new orders was evident across multiple sectors.

Firms in the information and communications sector and in the industries of retail, hotel and real estate all enjoyed more new orders in March compared to February.

But growth was strongest in the construction sector, where companies have thrived on big government infrastructure spending. The sector sub-index jumped 4.5 points from February to 62.5 in March.

Beijing had brought forward construction of about $150 billion worth of infrastructure last year as part of an effort to nudge the economy out of its worst slowdown in 13 years when annual growth sank to 7.8 percent.

That the rebound in activity extended across businesses in March indicates that China's economic recovery is well entrenched, said Qu Hongbin, a HSBC economist.

"Notably, the on-going recovery has translated into a continuous improvement of labor market conditions, which are supportive of consumer spending growth in coming quarters," Qu said.

The HSBC PMI showed staffing levels in services firms rose last month, albeit modestly, in the 49th consecutive month of gains as companies hired more workers to meet growing demand.

Yet busier activity did not fan inflation. Input prices rose more slowly in March compared with February. Moderate production inflation capped final prices, which barely rose last month from February.

Muted inflation should comfort investors worried that rising prices may lead China to tighten monetary policy too early and imperil its modest economic revival.

The central bank had raised money supply and cut interest rates twice last year by a total of 50 basis points to engineer a recovery in the economy.

Most analysts expect China's economy to enjoy a steady but gentle recovery this year, with infrastructure investment and household consumption helping compensate for softening demand for Chinese exports.
