New Iranian president set to bring changes to relationship with West

The election of Iran?s new president, Hassan Rohani, in June came a surprise to many. The 64 year old is known for his moderate views and openness for dialogue with the West.

The youth of the Islamic Republic of Iran have celebrated his election. They expect the new president to give the economy a boost, improve the value of the national currency, modernise the rail system, reduce the number of unemployed while at the same time give Iranians more civil liberties.

Hassan Rohani received the backing of former Iranian presidents Akbar Hachemi Rafsandjani and Mohammed Kahtami. They asked voters to support the newly elected president.

Since before the revolution, Rohani was a fervent supporter of the founder of the Islamic Republic, Ayatollah Khomeini, and served as a deputy in the Iranian parliament from 1980 until 2000. Rohani has a law doctorate from the University of Glasgow. He also held the role of Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, which brought him to negotiating table over Iran?s nuclear programme. He accepted the suspension of uranium enrichment and the application of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons., which permitted the surprise inspections of Iranian nuclear installations.

Rohani?s openness could signal a change in the relationship Iran has with the West following the eight strained years of the Ahmadinejad presidency.

Despite the expected changes in Iran, the new president is limited because the Islamic Republic?s constitution states that strategic issues such as the country?s nuclear policies are controlled by the Supreme Leader. However, he has a close relationship with Ali Khamenei.

U.S. Tops In User Data Requests, India Among Least: Twitter

New Delhi: US government, which has been in eye of a storm due to the snooping PRISM programme, had the lion's share in user data requests under it between January- June 2013, while India had less than 10 such requests, says the social networking site Twitter's transparency report.

Twitter's bi-annual Transparency Report, first published in July 2012, highlights trends in government requests for account information, content removal and copyright notices.

Of the total 1,157 user information requests received between January 1-June 30 2013, the US government made a total of 902 requests, Twitter said in the report.

PRISM, the controversial snooping programme run by the National Security Agency (NSA) of the US, allowed analysts to search through vast databases containing e-mails, online chats and browsing histories of millions of individuals.

During the most recent period (January-June 2013), 78 per cent of all worldwide requests received originated from the US, it added.

Japan followed the US with 87 user information requests, the UK (26), Brazil (22), Italy (22), France (18), Spain (13), among others.

As far removal request is concerned, Twitter said it received a total of 60 removal requests in the first six months of 2013.

Teams arrive in Bristol for Little League Baseball Eastern Regional

Thursday, August 1, 2013 10:21 PM EDT

BRISTOL ? Thursday was moving day for those involved in this year?s Little League Baseball Eastern Regional.

Whether it was a 331-mile trip or a 51-mile trip, 12 teams from 12 states converged on the Giamatti Little League complex on Mix Street. Berlin Little League of Berlin, Md., had the longest trip at 331 miles. Capitol City Little League of the District of Columbia was just a mile off of Berlin for the longest trip (330 miles).

Newark National Little League of Newark, Del., traveled 232 miles and was the first team to arrive. Newark arrived at about 10:45 a.m. and was followed in by Lionville Little League of Lionville, Penn. (221 miles). Each of the teams arrived at the front of the complex, got some sandwiches, chips and drinks, then checked into their dorms before a very busy day of team photos and meetings began.

Westport Little League of Westport, Conn., had the shortest ride ? 51 miles ? to get to Bristol.

?It was great,? Westport manager Tim Rogers said. ?We probably had the easiest ride of anybody.?

Westport is also familiar with the area, given that it just won the state championship by beating Coginchaug (Durham) at Verderame Field in Southington (Southington South Little League).

This is the first Westport Little League team to make the regional, so the town has put its support behind its team.

?It?s great,? Rogers said. ?It really is. The league?s behind us, the town?s behind us.?

A difficult loss in the 10-11 district final to Fairfield National served as motivation for this year.

?I look back on that now and I think that?s something that has helped us,? Rogers said.

The trip to Bristol is also a historic one for the East Greenwich Little League of Clarksboro, N.J. East Greenwich traveled 205 miles, but the trip was well worth it.

?This is the first time in over 50 years that a team from District 15 won states,? East Greenwich manager Jim Szestowicki said.

East Greenwich is also the first South Jersey team to win the state in over 20 years, according to Szestowicki.

?We worked hard,? Szestowicki said. ?The kids play a lot of baseball outside of Little League.?

This is also the first Eastern Regional for Berlin Little League, along with the Lionville Little League; the Newton South East Little League of Newton, Mass.; and the Burnt Hills Ballston Lake Little League of Burnt Hills, N.Y.

For those who work at the complex, the day began at 8 a.m., according to Assistant Eastern Region Director Corey Wright. It takes a small paid staff of six people and 250 volunteers to make sure that everything runs smoothly. Some volunteers even take a week?s vacation just so they?re free to help out.

?They?re all local,? Wright said.

Each team had a chaperone(s) ? aunts or uncles ? that led them to their dorms. The chaperones also led the teams around the complex to the meetings and photo sessions that took place. There were meetings for managers, players and umpires throughout the day. Wright also spoke to the players about being a part of the Eastern Regional.

?I talk to them about how special it is to get here,? Wright said.

Players are expected to be on their best behavior, but they are well taken care of with catered meals, lodging and an indoor swimming pool.

?The baseball will take care of itself,? Wright said. ?The comfort level and safety of the kids is what matters most.?

The Donald R. Soucy Hometown Heroes Monument was officially dedicated on Thursday night, but rain put a damper on the fireworks display that was planned. The fireworks will now be held after the Connecticut-Vermont game, which is scheduled for 8:15 p.m. The Opening Ceremonies are slated for 7:35 p.m.

The baseball begins at 11 a.m. when the District of Columbia plays Delaware.

Sony returns to quarterly profit on cheap yen

TOKYO (AP) -- As a slew of big-name Japanese companies report improved quarterly earnings, one theme is taking the sheen off their rosy numbers: mainstay businesses are still struggling despite the perk from a weaker yen.

The latest example came Thursday from Sony Corp. The Japanese electronics and entertainment company reported a 3.5 billion yen ($35 million) April-June profit, a reversal from the 24.6 billion yen loss it suffered the previous year.

Sony also saw some improvement in its smartphone and entertainment businesses. But it still had plenty of areas where it was lagging, such as digital cameras, video game machines and flat panel TVs. Its results would have been far different if it weren't for the favorable exchange rate.

A weak yen boosts the earnings of Japanese exporters, although Sony has been trying to reduce its vulnerability to exchange rate fluctuations in recent years when the yen was high.

Quarterly sales jumped 13 percent to 1.71 trillion yen ($17 billion). But they would have slipped 3 percent if it weren't for the declining yen, the Tokyo-based company said.

In its electronics unit, Sony gained 19 billion yen ($190 million) in operating profit from a cheap yen.

Other Japanese companies whose earnings fared better largely on a cheap yen included video-game maker Nintendo Co., automaker Honda Motor Co. and Sony's domestic archrival Panasonic Corp.

Their test lies in how they hold up in global competition - even without the benefits of a cheap yen.

Daniel Loeb, a U.S. hedge fund manager renowned for shaking up Yahoo Inc., sparked a rise in Sony's share price by proposing a spin off up to 20 percent of its movie, TV and music division. He says the money should be used strengthen Sony's ailing device manufacturing unit.

Sony has said it is considering the proposal from Third Point hedge fund, led by activist investor and billionaire Loeb, but it has also asked for more time to look at all sides. Sony shares have risen after the Loeb proposal.

Also helping Sony's bottom line for the latest quarter was its financial business, such as insurance, because of a recent recovery in the Japanese stock market, it said.

Sony, which makes the PlayStation 3 game machine and Walkman portable recorder, has suffered declining fortunes for several years.

It got slammed in portable digital players by the iPod and iPhone from Apple Inc. and intense competition from powerful South Korean rival Samsung Electronics Co. has also taken its toll.

Sony sank to record losses for the fiscal year ended March 2012 - the worst result in its more than six decade corporate history.

The company barely dragged itself back into the black for the fiscal year ended March.

An expensive yen had been a key culprit in its woes.

Sony's TV division has lost money for nine straight years. President Kazuo Hirai has repeatedly promised to end the TV losses during this fiscal year through March 2014. Sony achieved profitability in TVs for the latest April-June quarter on the back of its 4K TVs, an extremely high-end product.

Also for the quarter, Sony's movie business did well with the worldwide release of "Men in Black 3." Its music business included the release of popular albums Daft Punk's "Random Access Memories" and "The Truth about Love," by P!nk, it said.

Sony is also set to come out with its latest video game machine, the PlayStation 4, for the year-end holidays in the U.S. and Europe.

But how the machine will translate into better profits for Sony remains unclear. Increased research costs sent Sony's game division into an operating loss for the latest quarter.

"It was a so-so quarter," Chief Financial Officer Masaru Kato said, as the entertainment and financial businesses did well, and the struggling electronics unit was showing signs of improvement. "We think the first quarter is a good indicator that we are going in the right direction."

Sony kept its profit forecast for the full fiscal year unchanged at 50 billion yen ($500 million), but raised its sales forecast slightly to 7.9 trillion yen ($79 billion) from the 7.5 trillion ($75 trillion) it projected in May.

Sharp Corp., a Japanese electronics maker in deeper trouble than even Sony, reported Thursday that April-June quarter losses totaled 18 billion yen ($180 million), better than its 138 billion yen ($1.4 billion) loss for the same period a year earlier.
